In 2013 Muscular Dystrophy Australia (MDA) attained ISO 9001 accreditation from the International Organization for Standardization. This is a huge achievement which places MDA in a superior position in comparison to many other not-for-profit organisations. An ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) offers a comprehensive framework on which to build processes that help ensure key business objectives are achieved and the standard has received widespread international recognition.

Achieving this status has placed MDA into a very small group of elite not-for-profit organisations which wear the badge of ISO 9001 accreditation.

The assessment and certification process provided MDA’s management with an independent expert review, not only of compliance with the ISO 9001 Quality Standard, but also of areas within the business that could be improved. On-going audits and re-assessments will be undertaken to ensure the level of quality of service is upheld.

A Quality Management System enables MDA to:

  • Improve internal efficiency
  • Boost client, donor and government confidence
  • Increase staff morale and productivity
  • Identify system problems
  • Recognise new ways to solve problems
  • Encourage and improve staff performance

Becoming an ISO 9001 business means MDA has committed to enhancing client satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to both client and statutory/regulatory requirements.

The standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong client focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement.

ISO 9001 is used in some 176 countries by businesses and organisations large and small, in public and private sectors, by manufacturers and service providers, in all sectors of activity to achieve objectives such as the following:

  • Establishing a framework for continual improvement and client satisfaction
  • Harmonising quality requirements in sectors and areas of activity
  • Providing technical support for regulators
  • Transferring good managerial practice
  • Encouraging the rise of services.

MDA is proud to be able to offer such a high quality service to the disability sector and community. This accomplishment reflects MDA’s continual efforts to provide care and support which is of an international standard and receiving this accreditation has confirmed this objective.
