MD Community Support Program

For people affected by Muscular Dystrophy, there are many ways to connect with others who are facing similar challenges and experiences.

Whether chatting over the phone, meeting face-to-face or via the internet, many people have found friendship and support by linking up with others through MDA’s Community Support Programs.
MDA identified a need within our community for communication, support and information that was available and accessible to all, and responded by establishing the MDA Community Support Program.  The Community Support Program allows individuals and families to share information, seek advice and receive support in a means that is most comfortable and accessible to them.

MD-Net
MD-Net provides direct one-on-one support for individuals and families.  Once registered, MDA provides a list of people who match your selected criteria.  You may choose to be contacted by people who live in your locality, are of a similar age or are affected by the same disorder.

Support Groups
Support groups allow people to meet face-to-face in a group setting.  Support groups can be informal with a social gathering and exchange of information and ideas, or more formal with a set topic or workshop.
Some of the support groups that MDA facilitate are:

  • Disorder Specific Adult Groups - which are informal social gatherings.
  • Carer Support Groups - a more formal support group setting for carers, partners and family members. These support groups usually have guest presenters or interactive workshops on a range of topics including stress management, grief, financial support etc.
  • Young Kids Group - a fun and social group for young families with children aged under 7.  These informal support groups involve a fun outing for the children and allow parents to meet in a relaxed social environment.

It is MDA’s goal to provide support to as many individuals and families affected by Muscular Dystrophy as possible.  MDA’s Community Support Program allows us to achieve this by offering support through various means, to ensure that individuals and families have access to information and support regardless of their circumstance or geographic location.

For additional information regarding support groups in your area, please contact the MDA.
