Teachers' Seminar 2009
Neuromuscular Disorders in the School Environment
Tuesday 3rd March 2009
MDA Centre
111 Boundary Rd, North Melbourne
Designed for teachers, integration aides and other school support staff who have a child affected by a neuromuscular disorder at their school
The annual Teachers Seminar saw a fantastic turnout from many schools, it was an innovative way to pass on a wealth of information regarding children affected by muscular dystrophy and their integration into the schooling system.

We were very pleased to welcome guest speakers covering an array of topics, including Professor Andrew Kornberg, Director of Neurology from the Royal Children’s Hospital. Andrew presented to teachers a disorder overview and holistic management plan.
Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapists also presented to the audience, with practical solutions and considerations for special care for MD kids in schools. Social integration was also a highlighted topic, and the audience benefited by hearing from both Joanne Dexter and her son Jack who is affected by MD. They provided a deep and personal perspective of their experiences with integration and the education system.
The Teacher’s Seminar was a huge success, with welcome feedback on educating schools in all aspects of giving children with MD a seamless educational experience.
MDA have planned to run these seminars twice a year, in March and November.
