From the Desk – March 2015
What an amazing event this year’s MDA Run for Strength was on Sunday! I would have to say it was our most enjoyable fun run held to date with a crowd of more than 1,000 people and so far we have raised close to $30,000. The weather was perfect with bright sunny skies and the crowd was in fantastic form with an abundance of happy smiling faces and laughs shared. There were hundreds of superheroes zooming along the track and it was great to see so many of our MD community taking part. You can check out some of the event photos on our Facebook page here.
It has been heartening to watch this event grow over the past seven years from the idea of Ozi Akyildiz – a parent whose son has MD – and his friend Sam Quattrone, into the successful and inspiring fun run that we experienced over the weekend.
I would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors for their valuable contributions and all of the dedicated volunteers who so generously gave their time. Without the donation of both tangible items and people’s time the event would not be possible. Every dollar saved is a dollar earned, meaning more funds to go towards programs, services and research for the MD community.
It was an honour to have the event emceed by well-known Seven News television journalist, Kristy Mayr, as it is always encouraging to have high profile people take notice of Muscular Dystrophy and understand the need to raise awareness about this life-threatening condition. We are always looking for MDA Ambassadors to help us in our fight against Muscular Dystrophy and welcome our community to reach out to any prominent people or celebrities within their social circle to see if they will come on board to support the cause.
We have two exciting events coming up next month with our inaugural Big Boys Toys Car Show being held on Sunday 8 March at Essendon Fields and a Corporate Golf Day hosted at the picturesque Sanctuary Lakes Club on Thursday 19 March. I am personally really looking forward to our car show as I will be bringing along my Corvette and hope that a lot of like-minded people will join us for a thrilling day of vintage, modern and muscle cars. There is definitely a conscious synergy between hosting a male-oriented car show event to raise much needed funds for a condition which mainly affects the male population. We are seeking the support of more volunteers to make the event the success it deserves to be so would love to see as many people as possible put their muscle into Muscular Dystrophy!
The Corporate Golf Day will be an invaluable networking opportunity and we encourage people from all different industries and areas to join together for a day of golf, socialising and supporting a great cause. The Greg Norman designed 18 hole championship course has been praised by amateurs and professionals alike, and is highly rated amongst Australia’s top 100 courses. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, along with golf carts for all players.
To volunteer for the car show please call MDA on 9320 9555 or for more information about any of the events we are hosting visit the homepage of the MDA website.
